Wawa, Inc., a privately held company, began in 1803 as an iron foundry in New Jersey. Toward the end of the 19th Century, owner George Wood took an interest in dairy farming and the family began a small processing plant in Wawa, Pa, in 1902. The milk business was a huge success, due to its quality, cleanliness and “certified” process. As home delivery of milk declined in the early 1960s, Grahame Wood, George’s grandson, opened the first Wawa Food Market in 1964 as an outlet for dairy products.
Today, Wawa is your all day, every day stop for fresh, built-to-order foods, beverages, coffee, fuel services, and surcharge-free ATMs. A chain of more than 645 convenience retail stores (over 365 offering gasoline), Wawa stores are located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Central Florida. The stores offer a large fresh food service selection, including Wawa brands such as built-to-order hoagies, freshly brewed coffee, hot breakfast sandwiches, built-to-order specialty beverages, and an assortment of soups, sides and snacks.
Our Logo: "Wawa" is a Native American word for the Canada Goose that was found in the Delaware Valley over 100 years ago. Our original Dairy farm was built on land located in a rural section of Pennsylvania called Wawa. That's why we use the goose on Wawa's corporate logo.

Wawa has a long history as a leader in the food industry. Since the first Wawa opened on April 16, 1964, we’ve been committed to offering safe, quality, fresh food. Today, our business has grown to more than 700 stores serving communities in six states with a wide variety of fresh food and beverages.
Rooted in our core values and delivered through thousands of our wonderful Wawa Associates, we are on a journey of continuous improvement in partnership with our suppliers to "do things right" and to "do the right thing" for our customers, our communities and our planet. We've established an independent Advisory Council that includes national experts and thought leaders in food safety, animal welfare, food technology and health and wellness.
Our goal is to improve and formalize the principles, decision making, policy, programs, standards and audit criteria for the thousands of food products we serve. The Council will complete an analysis of academic studies, interest and advocacy group research, key government policy papers, regulations and regional and global food industry trends that will impact our company and food policies over the next generations. We are already using this information to inform and enhance our everyday food practices in every store, and with every customer.
We are on a journey of continuous improvement with our suppliers to achieve these objectives for our Wawa branded products. Making changes to ingredients and practices will take time. We are committed to working with suppliers who continue to demonstrate progress in meeting our objectives.
We will transition 10% of the eggs in our breakfast sandwiches to be cage free by 2017. Our goal is to use cage free eggs in all breakfast sandwiches by 2020. We will transition our carton eggs to cage free by 2018.
Support using suppliers who practice more humane processes including not using gestational crates by 2022.
Serve 100% of our chicken and turkey with no use of antibiotics ever by 2018. Support our suppliers in improving their processes for humanely raising and preparing chicken and turkey.
Wawa branded fluid dairy products contain no rBGH or rBST growth hormones. Work with our beef suppliers to improve their practices to ensure animals are raised responsibly and treated humanely.
Only purchase Palm Oil from suppliers who are certified in sustainable practices and do not practice deforestation.
Evaluate all of our ingredients to source and serve high quality ingredients under a “cleaner” label. We strive to remove all artificial colors, flavors and preservatives by 2019.
Currently, nearly 1 million pounds of our quality coffee program is Rain Forest Alliance (RFA) certified. RFA supports responsible farmers and ensures the sustainable farming practices of our coffee growers. Our goal is to triple our certified sustainable coffee purchases over the next five years. At the same time, working with our suppliers, we will also have programs in place that directly support the farmers in the regions where our coffee is grown.
To ensure our direct and indirect suppliers demonstrate progress and adherence to our objectives, Wawa will enhance our Supplier Risk Program to include additional monitoring and accountability measures.
We have always considered our business as “friends and neighbors serving friends and neighbors.” So we see our commitment to safe and sustainable products as the evolution of our founding promise. This is a journey for all of us. We will regularly measure progress and compliance to our objectives to ensure that we are providing food products that are fresh tasting, safe to eat and sustainably produced. We see this as not the new way, but the Wawa Way.
