About Us - Wawa Environmental Profile
Wawa is committed to protecting the environment in all aspects of our business. We consider the
environmental impact of our products and services while continuing to provide a safe,
quality experience that meets customers’ needs. This includes taking a stewardship approach by
addressing the environmental aspects of our products in order to maintain the highest standards of
environmental quality.
Innovations and Technology
As a leading gas retailer,Wawa has earned a reputation for developing innovative and flexible
environmental solutions.
Case in point: Wawa utilizes one of the most accurate detection and monitoring systems in the industry, which is designed in conjunction with leading industry and environmental manufacturers. The system has redundant tracking software that continually monitors every sensor on-site. The system is capable of detecting leaks as small as 0.11 ounces per second. In addition, the design of the underground tanks and piping materials allow the system to contain any release that may occur, eliminating damage to the environment in the event of a potential release.
Training and Education
Wawa’s environmental education program is one of the most comprehensive in the industry.
Each store management team participates in over 40 hours of training in environmental awareness and policy.
The education process covers safety procedures and policy, monitoring and response techniques, federal regulations and
guidelines, and on-site technology.
Wawa has also created an environmental call center available to all associates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The call center is staffed by
professionals trained to answer any procedural or situational questions and suggest the best environmental solution.
Taking the Lead on Environmental Safety
By taking a proactive approach to environmental technology, Wawa has significantly impacted the design of safety equipment in
the gasoline industry.
In the past, nozzle overflows from “automatic shut-off valve failure” were very common in the gasoline
industry. While they are seen as minor inconveniences to many distributors, these overflows can
result in gasoline spills equal to multiple gallons per day.
Wawa recognized the problem and worked with a fueling equipment manufacturer to design a new
single position fuel nozzle clip that would greatly reduce the occurrence of spills.
After performing a detailed two-month test to ensure the safety and reliability of the design,
Wawa installed the new nozzles in all of its gasoline facilities. The nozzles have reduced spill
occurrences greatly and increased customer convenience.
The single position nozzle clip has been adopted by several other gasoline distributors and
may become the standard in the industry.
