Wawa Launches Text and Web Food Ordering in Eight Philadelphia-Area Stores
Wawa, PA. (May, 2008) – Wawa, Inc. today announced the expansion of their pilot for a new service that allows customers to pre-order food through text messages or online. In partnership with GoMobo, an innovator in mobile payment technology, Wawa’s launched the service in two Malvern Pennsylvania locations earlier this year. Now, Wawa is rolling it out to six additional Philadelphia-area locations.
The new service provides customers with the ability to pre-order their Wawa favorites over the internet or through cell phone text-messaging, pre-pay, have their payment processed automatically, and pick up their order at the store without ever waiting in line.
“As the first convenience and food retailer in our market to provide this service, we look forward to bringing this cutting edge convenience into the lives of our extremely busy customers,” said Howard Stoeckel, Wawa’s President and CEO. “It’s almost 2 good 2 be true!”
On March 11, 2008, the new service officially launched at the Wawa on 10 Liberty Boulevard and the Wawa on 5 Matthews Road in Malvern Pennsylvania. On April 21, 2008 the service launched at the Wawa on 1260 North Providence Road and the Wawa on 100 East Baltimore Pike in Media PA, and as of April 28, 2008 the service launched at the Wawa on 3604 Chestnut Street and the Wawa on 3744 Spruce Street in Philadelphia. The service is scheduled to roll-out in four Pottstown-area stores in the near future.
“At Wawa we are committed to constantly reinventing and redefining convenience in our quest to simplify the lives of our customers,” said Stoeckel. “Not only does this new service make ordering food faster and more efficient than ever, but it caters to all people of all ages, whether you’re an office worker placing your order on the web, or a student sending an order via text. This is truly a universally convenient technology.”
Market research indicates the user base is widely spread among different age groups. In fact, 89% of customers surveyed say using GoMobo makes their visit take much less time and 99% of users say they definitely or probably will use it in the future.
Noah N. Glass, CEO of GoMobo, said, "We're very excited to be working with Wawa - ordering ahead will make life even more convenient for busy Wawa customers."

About Wawa, Inc. Wawa, Inc., a
privately held company, began in 1803 as an iron foundry in
New Jersey. Toward the end of the 19th Century, owner George
Wood took an interest in dairy farming and the family began a
small processing plant in Wawa, Pa, in 1902. The milk business
was a huge success, due to its quality, cleanliness and
“certified” process. As home delivery of milk declined in the
early 1960’s, Grahame Wood, George’s grandson, opened the
first Wawa Food Market in 1964 as an outlet for dairy
products. Today, Wawa operates more than 570 stores in
Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and
Virginia.
