Remembering 9/11

Posted: September 9, 2011   |   Category: Culture

It was 10 years ago that our country experienced the worst terrorist attack in the history of our nation. The events of September 11, 2001 have had a profound impact on all of our lives and it is fitting that we give special reflection to this 10th anniversary.

In remembrance of that day 10 years ago, our Internal Care team organized an event this week at Red Roof (our corporate headquarters) that brought together our Wawa family and extended family for an emotional moment of remembrance and reflection. It was very fitting that our Internal Care team arranged this, being that they are a team at Wawa devoted to addressing catastrophic life events of associates with empathy and expertise.

Prior to the ceremony, associates and their families placed more than 3,000 flags on the lawn of Red Roof.  The day of the ceremony, associates shared reflections, some remembering family and friends. The local fire company and honor guard joined the ceremony while bagpipes and patriotic tunes rang throughout the somber air.

This weekend, in our stores, you may notice that some Associates on duty will be wearing flag stickers near their nametags in order to observe this solemn anniversary and to honor those we have lost.

Here at Wawa, we have created a strong culture of caring, respect and support that bonds our associates and customers, bringing us together during times of need and for important milestones. It is only fitting that we come together on the 10th anniversary, not only for our Wawa team, but for the entire community and country.

It’s a Wawa World

Posted: August 24, 2011   |   Category: Culture

“It’s a Wawa World.” This statement isn’t news to me –or our wonderful associates – but thanks to a prominent feature in the August 2011 issue of Philadelphia Magazine, more people are buzzing with talk about “a Wawa World.”

I have to say that this feature displayed our true essence in a way that few have ever captured in the printed word.  To truly know and love Wawa is to understand what a unique and magical place it is—a place that has transcended the boundaries of a typical convenience store and, as Philadelphia Magazine puts it, “has achieved cult-like customer devotion that every consumer brand on the globe dreams about.”  It’s often difficult to express what Wawa means to our customers and associates, and it was thrilling to see that Don Steinberg, from Philadelphia Magazine, managed to perfectly express that for readers.

Very fittingly, the article begins by describing one of our steadfast customers who admits “when he was getting the Wawa logo tattooed on his right inner bicep, the second ‘wa’ kind of hurt.”  Now that’s what we call customer loyalty! And this is just one of the many stories Philadelphia Magazine cites as a testament to what some would consider a “convenience cult.”  While the devotion of our customers has always been referred to as cult-like, this term seemed to stick after we were featured in the 2006 New York Times article “Convenience Cult,” which the Philadelphia Magazine piece goes into detail about.

The article boasts dozens of Wawa successes, such as the continuous in-store improvement to maximize speed and customer experience, our striking sales statistics, our positive impact on local economies and community organizations, our growing list of store locations and the unparalleled customer service provided by our associates.  But, more than anything, it shows that we are a living brand.  A brand customers can taste, touch and feel on a regular basis.  No matter how our customers show their adoration, whether it be as a Facebook fan, a daily shopper, or through body art, our customers personalize our brand to make it their own.

Drilling down to heart of our company, what really makes the “Wawa World” go round is our people. It’s our 17,000 incredible associates who make up the Wawa family and embrace our core value, and it’s our wonderful customers, more than 400 million annually, who brighten up our stores and honor us with their faithful patronage.   I would be remised if I didn’t thank our customers and associates alike for loyalty and friendship.

Wawa truly is a magical place and this article does a wonderful job of capturing some of the intangibles that make us so special.  But don’t take my word for it…read it for yourself!  http://www.phillymag.com/restaurants/articles/it_s_a_wawa_world/

Welcoming Our Associate Talent

Posted: June 21, 2011   |   Category: Culture
Throughout Wawa, there is a feeling of excitement surrounding our Wawa Welcome America! festivities.  There's an energy you can feel as our associates and our customers are gearing up for the eleven days of excitement and celebration that are about to kick off.

Overwhelmingly, one of the events our associates are most excited about is our second annual Associate Talent Event. It's our search for Wawa's best solo singer and the competition and the support has been great this year. Last year, first place went to Kristin Jackson from Perryville, Maryland, who truly knocked the judges out of their seats with Jill Scott's One is the Magic Number.  This year after auditioning more than 200 associates, we've narrowed the group down to the top 12 finalists through local and regional audition rounds. These associates are about to go head-to-head in this American Idol-inspired singing contest held immediately following our Wawa Hoagie Day festivities on June 29th at Noon at the Independence Mall area, 6th & Market.

Check out this video of our associates practicing for the final round. They are wonderful!

Emceed by our very own Ryan Seacrest look-alike, during our Talent finals, a panel of celebrity judges will listen to the finalists' patriotic song choices and decide who deserves to be named top Wawa vocalist.  While the judges are deliberating, the finalists will all come out and sing a group rendition of Proud to be an American as a tribute to our armed services.  The winner will receive an iPad 2 an iTunes Gift Card and 2 VIP Tickets to the Welcome America! July 4th concert.   What's more the winner will perform on one of the entertainment stages at the Party on the Parkway on July 4th!

It's going to be an incredible event you don't want to miss.

The associate talent event is sure to be exciting and entertaining for the Wawa Welcome America crowd.  But perhaps more importantly, it illustrates our commitment to celebrating our associates' individual talents as well as the unique spirit and camaraderie that exists here among the Wawa family.  I couldn't be prouder of our associates' conviction to making this event and the entire Wawa Welcome America! celebration a one-of-a-kind, spectacular event.  Hope to see you there!
